Hi from London
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:46:24 AM »

Hi all just thought i'd introduce myself. My names Alan and i'm from south london (croydon) and i run my own mobile car valeting business. My dream car has to be an opel rekord! A friend of mine purchased one in november and asked me to polish it up for him... as soon as i saw it i fell in love! The only problem is he supposedly owns the only one in the country! I am considering buying a chevette hatchback within the next few months and dropping a straight six lump in it mainly because it will be in a reasonably low insurance group (i'm 18). Any comments or info on this sort of conversion would be great!  :yahoo:

Welcome to the VQ9, You will get great support for the Chevette on here. Keep us updated on your progress. A Record could be hard to find but I will keep my eyes open for one.

Thanks guys for the welcomes! And Charlie it would be great if you keep an eye out for a rekord. I will tell my friend about the site and get him to upload some pics.

The more details of what you would like, the better. Mainly year, engine size and colour if need be. I do look around a lot of classic car sales sites so you never know. Also are you prepared to travel or import one? You may have to. A left hand drive would be easier to get, would that be a problem. If you have never driven a left hooker on a right hand drive road, you do get used to it very quickly and will never look back or you could convert it to right hand drive.
A few things to think about.

Well i'm only young so insurance will be a problem concerning engine size, however i could be cheeky and change the engine myself and not tell insurance company (i know this will make insurance void and could get me in [Censored]). So basically i'm restricted to 1.4l max. I doubt i would be able to import due to funds. My budget atm is around ?1000 but i am eager to find something which needs some work, whether it be mechanical or appearance. I am keen on viva's and chevette's but left hand drive would be a problem for me!

I had my eye on this chevette - http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C89455/
Considering its condition i thought it was great value, but it's now sold :(

But not with a 1.4 engine. You will try anything to get someone into a Cally.
