means i should be safe for 36,000 miles
Famous last words mate. If I were you, I would replace the belt at around 30k. A few years ago, my (now a distant ex) had a N reg Tigra 1.6 16v, that had a new timing belt fitted by Vauxhall. They used a genuine kit and water pump and the work was carried out by "Vauxhall trained technicians" (and the price reflected this).
Anyway, the new kit was fitted at 71k.... all was going well until the mileage clicked 103k. On a warm summers morning, she was late for work, got in the car started it up as normal and bang, the belt snapped. The resulting damage was 15 bent valves. Despite the main dealer doing the work, and using genuine GM parts, they basically said tough, that'll be £1400 + vat for a rebuild. The service manager said that although Vauxhall recommend the belt kit is changed every 4 years or 36k miles, this is purely advice. It should really be done at 30k. He also said that "Vauxhall cannot and will not entertain a warranty claim due to failure of the belt of this age."
